Vilnius want to be World Book Capital in 2014
Talking with journalists the major of Vilnius Artūras Zuokas said on Friday he had signed an application by the Lithuanian Publishers’ Association and the Lithuanian Writers’ Union for granting the Lithuanian capital city the status of World Book Capital in 2014.
World Book Capital is a title bestowed by UNESCO to a city in recognition of the quality of its programs to promote books and reading and the dedication of all players in the book industry
In the past a lot of famous cities was assigned for the status like Madrid, Torino, New Delhi, Montreal, Bogotà…
Publishers believe the status of the World Book Capital would increase literary production, encourage people to read books, step up publication and spread of Lithuanian literary works, give a positive boost to existing and new literary, book art, and publication projects.
